Background

Approximately  180 AH-1W’s provide the backbone of the United States Marine Corps' attack helicopter fleet.  In 2005, the turned exhaust system was developed by Bell and NAVAIR after extensive testing for the AH-1Z and UH-1Y fleet.

Newer more powerful engines in the Cobra fleet led to an increase in the heat signature. After testing of modified exhausts on the AH-1Z and UH-1Y, the turned exhausts were fitted to the AH-1W fleet. The turned exhaust improves the Cobra’s survivability by managing the exhaust flow and then turning the exhaust away from the helicopter's tail boom. This decreases the helicopter's infrared signature, and it also helps by decreasing engine exhaust heat on tail booms.

Resin

The set comes in a plastic ziplock bag mounted on card backing. The 5 grey resin parts are very robust in their design. The five pieces include the spilt exhaust fairing, driveshaft cover, 2 x exhaust stacks and engine component and are recommended for the MRC/AFV Club/Italeri  kit.

The instructions are very detailed and the big item to note is that there is a lot of resin here, and therefore weight. The instructions recommend some drilling be done to certain areas of the main resin to attempt to reduce the overall weight and therefore load on the skids.

The detail on the resin parts is nicely detailed down to rivets and all the moulding s are clear of bubbles.
The Werner’s Wings website contains addition images and a quick search of the web will turn up plenty of reference images to assist you with your build.

Conclusion

This is a great set to allow the rotorhead in you to build the US Marines latest version of the ubiquitous AH-1 family
