Various Cockpit & External PE Detail Sets

Each set comes in a cellophane bag stapled to a card header. All include instructions other than the gun sight set. The 1/72-scale sets have a transparency for their PE instrument panels. The instructions are easy to follow and the PE frets are of good quality. The lack of colour call outs for the cockpits is a minor inconvenience, and is easy to overcome.

Most of the review’s images are from Brengun’s website. These illustrate the PE parts in situ on their intended kit. This is more useful than an image of a PE fret alone, although I have included these as well. The details of each set’s contents are as follows:

• BRL72032 – XFL-1 Airabonita (for the RS Models kit): This set improves the kit’s cockpit. It has a new instrument panel and seat, and many other small details to enhance its appearance. It can also replace the kit doors if whished. Care is needed when cutting of the kit’s fuselage and canopy if you do choose to have open doors. Harder still I think, will be bending the PE doors and clear film windows to match the curve of the fuselage. I suggest that PE doors be finished before you cut any plastic.

• BRL72030 – Reggiane Re 2005 (for the Sword kit): This set has internal and external details to dress up your Sagittario. Some much-needed seat belts, superior instruments, and a gun-sight frame all serve to improve the cockpit. The PE wheel well interiors and torque links also improve on the kit items. There are new radiator flaps to replace the kit items. These will look more refined; and being positionable, they should add interest to the model. Replacement fins for the kit’s bomb round out the set.

• BRL720310 – Gun Sights (for any kit): These sights appear to be a little over-scale, but this is due to the practical limits of photo etching. Nevertheless, they will improve on kit sights or being left with a sightless weapon.

• BRL144044 – MiG-21 Bis (for the Eduard kit): This set has internal and external details to dress up your Fishbed. It improves the kit’s cockpit with an instrument panel, side consoles and a seat harness. PE wing fences, undercarriage doors, and missile fins all add scale finesse. Pitot vanes and an after-burner nozzle serve to extend this. It has two sets of PE presumably because there are two kits per box.

• BRL144045 – Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe (for the Sweet kit): This set improves the kit’s cockpit and supplies a boarding ladder. It has a new side panels and seat, and some other small details to enhance its appearance. It provides two sets of PE to allow for the fact that Sweet supplies two kits per box.
  

These are all good detail and accessory sets that will enhance their intended kits. Their lack of colour call-outs is easy to overcome. I am pleased to report that there are no superfluous parts with these sets. I think that some may forgo the Airabonita’s PE and film doors however.
