Maestro Models produces a wide range of resin and PE accessories for improving and converting kits of Swedish aircraft subjects. Although they are a Swedish company I understand that their components are produced in the Czech Republic. The resin is by CMR Moulding & Casting and the pre-coloured PE is by Eduard, so it should come as no surprise that the parts are very good quality.

The Maestro Models range is for me a very welcome one as I’m a fan of SAAB aircraft, and I’m sure there will be many other modellers who will appreciate what they have to offer as well.

The JAS 39 Gripen has been quite an export success for SAAB, yet I’m only aware of the Italeri kit in 1/72-scale which has also been re-boxed by Revell and Bilek and even Airfix. The Italeri kit was offered both JAS 39 single-seat A and two-seat B boxings, but I’m unsure if the other company offered the B as well.

Intended for the above kit, the conversion reviewed here comes supplied in a zip-lock plastic bag with a folded A-4 sheet of paper that illustrates the parts, provides instructions for the conversion, and lists Maestro Models’ range.

The conversion replaces the kit’s tail section with one that incorporates the APU (auxiliary power unit) and provides the different main wheels of this version. As such it is a simple conversion set requiring careful removal of the tail section from the kit parts. The instructions are basic but more than adequate as not much in the way of guidance is needed.  The quality of casting is excellent.

Conclusion

This is very good and quite simple conversion set to convert the Italeri/Revell/Bilek/Airfix JAS 39A/B to a C or D version respectively. I’m happy to recommend this set and encourage readers to check out Maestro models’ range.

Thanks to Maestro Models for the review sample..
