Background

Many will have read or seen of a USN Skyraider dropping a toilet “bomb” during the Vietnam War. Proof if any were needed, that the Skyraider could carry and deliver almost.

For a detailed account of the circumstances behind the toilet bomb and details that will be helpful in finishing a model so armed see here at Tailhook Topics

The “Weapon”

The parts come in Brengun’s standard individual cellophane bags for each type of media, and instructions attached by staples to a card header. The instructions are well-drawn and easy enough to understand. They include photos of the subject aircraft with the other weapons carried on the toilet bomb mission, although these are better illustrated and detailed at the Tailhook Topics link provide earlier.

The toilet is a single resin piece nicely cast. The PE provides the frame that surrounded the porcelain toilet and the “arming” impeller. Decals for airframe 35297 along with unit and aircraft identification markings are also provided.

The decals on my sample were scratched in several areas, I think due to insufficient clear cover coat; and in the case of my review sample would need replacement.

Perhaps the biggest challenge for modellers will be finding the other weapons carried as part of this historic load-out. I suppose Brengun could have provided these too, but the cost of the set would have increased significantly if they had. As it is, modellers will have to source form their spares box or after-market weapons sets

This is simple, good quality and amusing armament option for Skyraider fans. It is pleasing that Brengun also took the trouble to provide the markings for the aircraft concerned. I think that the biggest challenge will be finding the other weapons needed to complete the toilet bomb load-out. The decals in my review sample were a disappointingly vulnerable to abrasion, I think due to an inadequate sealant coat.

Recommended.

Thanks to Brengun Models for the review sample.
