Scale:

Contents and Media:

Waterslide decal

Review Type:

First Look

Advantages:

Diverse range of well researched subjects, superb artwork with accompanying reference photos; optional parts listed from donor kit where needed; decals in perfect register with minimal surrounding carrier film; the inclusion of instrument faces, logos, and stencil data.

Disadvantages:

Fuselage crosses would have been helpful for those schemes where they were (mostly) over-painted in #30006.

Conclusion:

Another set of very comprehensive sheets from Wingnut Wings. They supply more than just the relevant national and personal markings, so there’s plenty left over for the spares box. The level of research means that each subject can be tackled with confidence and the diverse assortment of schemes is also pleasing. Some of the options presented here have “lozenge”covered wings and fuselages. For reasons of economy, this material is not included, although the donor kit contains enough patterned material in most cases. Those needing more are the schemes with “5-colour” fuselages.

FirstLook

Following hot on the heels of their acclaimed Fokker D.VII series, Wingnut Wings has released a quartet of decal sheets to entice the modeller. One each is devoted to the Fokker and Albatros- built versions, with those from OAW receiving a double dose of glamour.

As usual, it all comes on 1 ½ A4 sized sheets of decal paper and are printed by Cartograf in Italy. As such the quality is up to the high standard found in the kits themselves. Every item is printed with perfect colour registration and is surrounded by a minimum of carrier film.

Despite their size, they do stand up to the rigours of pushing and prodding when being positioned on the model. Decal setting solutions will work well but it is advisable to stay clear of the stronger solutions.

A huge bonus with these sheets is the sheer number of extra items to be found. Not only do we get the expected national and personal markings but we also get a wealth of stencil data. Included in this lot are instrument dials, propeller logos, and much more. It’s all legible under a magnifying glass which is a credit to the printers.

The instruction sheet is very comprehensive and clearly lets you know where each decal should go. Ronny Bar’s superb artwork takes care of side, upper and lower views and is complimented by period photos of the subject under consideration. Another highly commendable aspect is the callout for the appropriate optional parts gleaned from the donor kit. No second guessing needed by the builder here.

For complete accuracy, some of the aircraft will need their “louvers” modified. True to form, Wingnut Wings makes sure the modeller is aware of what needs to be done.

#30006 Fokker D.VII (Fok) Fighting Fokkers part 1 (cover artwork at top of page)

  1. Fokker D.VII (Fok) “MK”, Ludwig Reimann, Jasta 78b, Late 1918 (2 victories)

  2. Fokker D.VII (Fok) 373/18, Heinrich Piel, Jasta 13b, June 1918 (2 victories)

  3. Fokker D.VII (Fok) 382/18, George Hantlemann (25 victories) & Kurt Wüstoff (27 victories), Jasta 15, June 1918

  4. Fokker D.VII (Fok) 402/18, Max Holtzem, Jasta 16b, mid 1918 (2 victories)

  5. Fokker D.VII (Fok), 244/18, Lothar von Richthofen (Jasta 11, 40 victories) & Aloys Heldmann (Jasta 10, 15 victories), June -  July 1918

Option D will require additional 5 colour fuselage “lozenge” that the “Fokker-built” base kit (#32011) doesn’t provide. Options A and C also need various amounts of tail-plane/ elevator coverage but it may be possible to glean it from the donor kit’s spare 5-colour. Photos also show that the original crosses on A, B, and C was not completely covered by the over-painted fuselages. They still showed faintly through the blue paint. These crosses are not supplied on the decal sheet for the modeller to lightly spray over, so other means of simulation need to be considered.

#30007 Fokker D.VII (Alb) Fighting Fokkers part 2

  1. Fokker D.VII (Alb) 571/18, Adolf Gutknecht, Jasta 43, July 1918 (8 victories)

  2. Fokker D.VII (Alb) 666/18, Hans Dannenberg (4 victories), Vzfw. M?hring, Rudolf Nebel (2 victories), Kesta 1a/Jasta 90, late 1918

  3. Fokker D.VII (Alb) 833/18?, Robert Greim, Jasta 34b, October  1918 (28 victories)

  4. Fokker D.VII (Alb) 5278/18, “Hertha”, Jasta 27, October  - November  1918

  5. Fokker D.VII (Alb), “2”, Otto Creutzmann (8 victories) & Josef Raesch (7 victories), Jasta 43, July 1918

All options on this sheet can be made using the Albatros-built version of the donor kit (#32027) without the need for extra decals.

#30008 Fokker D.VII (OAW) Fighting Fokkers part 3

  1. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 2052/18, Karl Thom, Jasta 21s, 1918 (27 victories)

  2. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 4453/18, Alfred Lindenberger, Jasta 2, November  1918 (16 victories)

  3. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 4631/18, “Lot”, Jasta 64w, late 1918

  4. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 4635/18, “U10”, Heinz Freiherr von Beaulieu – Marconnay, Jasta 65, September 1918

  5. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 6441/18, Max Näther, Jasta 62, October – November  1918 (26 victories)

Once again the basic kit, in this case the OAW-Built D.VII (kit #32030), provides all of the necessary “lozenge”.

#30009 Fokker D.VII (OAW) Fighting Fokkers part 4

  1. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 4025/18, Paul Strähle, Jasta 57, September 1918 (15 victories)

  2. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 4649/18, “Seven Swabians”, Wilhelm Scheutzel, Jasta 65, 1918 (1 victories)

  3. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 6344/18, “Yellow X”, Jasta 58, late 1918

  4. Fokker D.VII (OAW) 6428/18, “Lude”, Hans Joachim von Hippel, Jasta 71, October - November 1918 (2 victories)

  5. Fokker D.VII (OAW), Ltn Fritz Schliewen, Jasta 6, September 1918 (2 victories)

As with the Fokker-built sheet, not all options can be built using the donor kit’s lozenge. Extra “5 colour” will be need for the fuselage of option D.

Conclusion

It’s obvious that a lot of effort has gone into the production of these sheets. This is reflected in the instructions, reference photos, and artwork, which is some of the best on the subject.

These releases capture a variety of schemes that are sufficiently different to suit all tastes. The quality of the printing is excellent and the level of research is first-class.

To keep costs down, extra 5-colour “lozenge” hasn’t been included in the package but is available separately as #32001 (upper) and #32002 (lower).

So if you want a replica that’s different from those options presented in the box, then these sheets are just the thing.

Thanks to Wingnut Wings for the sample
