It’s no surprise that new decal sets often follow hard on the heels of new kit releases, and this Xtradecal release is a well-timed follow-up to Airfix's eagerly awaited Lancaster B Mk.II kit.

This set covers four RAF and three RCAF squadron aircraft.  Four have normal pattern bomb-bays and three have the bulged bomb-bays with FN64 ventral turret.

The seven subjects covered are:

  • DS708, EQ-Q, 'Queen of Spades' 408 (Goose) Sqn RCAF, Linton-on-Ouse;

  • LL636, EQ-G, 'Goose/Miss Kingsville' 408 (Goose) Sqn RCAF, Linton-on-Ouse;

  • DS604, QR-W, 61 Sqn, RAF Syerston;

  • DS620, KO-W, B-Flight 115 Sqn, RAF East Wretham;

  • DS827, A4-R, C-Flight 115 Sqn, RAF East Wretham;

  • LL670, JI-K2, 514 Sqn with yellow fin bands, RAF Waterbeach;

  • DS830, QO-S, 'Bobby Boy' 432 Sqn RCAF, RAF Eastmoor.

The decals are supplied in Xtradecal’s usual A5 window envelope. The instructions are nicely produced in colour and clearly indicate markings placement. A brief note regarding the aircraft and its station location is given for each subject, and in several cases notes on the style of bomb-aimers blister fitted and the absence of prop spinners. Paint references use BS381C codes and paint names. Not surprisingly a list of Xtracolour paint codes is also provided for the colours required.

The decals look to be superbly printed and with excellent colour density. Xtradecal have provided sufficient national insignia to complete one aircraft, but of course the kits being built should also have roundel decals as well.
