The late war and post war liveries of the Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib are not well known for being particularly interesting. The main choice presented to us modellers generally seems to alternate between “with invasion stripes” and “without invasion stripes”.

XtraDecal has expanded this limited horizon by producing a decal set that gives the modeller a plethora of unusual Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib options covering the May 1944 – July 1945 period.

These include examples not only offering “with” and “without” invasion stripes, but also post war upper wing roundels, colourful fuselage bands and spinners, examples that are rocket or bomb equipped, even some with victory tallies/bomb-logs and nose art! This sheet comes just in time to provide some added interest to the new and excellent Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib.

But that’s not all… those of us with the older (but still presentable) 1/72 Academy kit, flawed primarily by its provision of the early (and less common) Tempest short chord tail plane, are not forgotten. Three options of this rarer configuration with the short chord tail and three blade prop are also included.

All told, markings for no less than 18 aircraft are supplied (actually there are really 19 as you can make one of the options at two different time periods). Roundels and fin flashes for at least six aircraft are provided.

This generous assortment of decals are compactly arranged on a single blue coloured backing sheet, the carrier film is thin, resolution, alignment and colour density is excellent. The dull red on the war time roundels and the “sky” colour of the fuselage codes are “spot-on” to my eye.

Options provided are as follows:

  • Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib MN317/ZY-B. 247 Sqn, June 1944; Invasion stripes.

  • Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib MN454/HF-S. 183 Sqn, May 1944; 3-blade prop, Tempest tail plane, Invasion stripes.

If you didn’t already have an excuse to make get the new Airfix 1/72 Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib, this new decal sheet will provide you with at least half a dozen. This is a beautiful sheet which offers a fantastic variety of late/post war Typhoon Ib. The only problem I see is choosing which ones to do.

Recommended.

Thanks to Hannants for this sample.
