FirstLook

PJ Productions has produced a fine kit to replicate the Mirage III R/RZ and 5F.  The kit is based on the accurately produced Mirage III that I have described by me in a build article earlier on Hyperscale and I will not replicate that article here.

You may also see the plastic parts in Glen Porter's in-box review.

The PJ Production offering includes some nice resin details as follows:

  • 2 x Mirage 5 fuel tanks

  • IIIR/RZ fin

  • Bulged Doppler panel

  • Instrument Panel

  • Control Stick

  • Upper and lower ejection seat handle

  • Ejection seat

  • Recon nose in clear resin

The resin seat is a vast improvement over the injection moulded seat as it includes accurate parachute pack detail and seat harness detail which is difficult to capture in injection moulding.

The resin instrument panel includes accurate upper shroud detail and instrument panel detail which is also difficult to capture in plastic.

The fin is included for the IIIR/RZ version and does require some minor but simple surgery of the kit to locate it on the rear fuselage.  An etched metal fret contains ;

  • Boarding ladder

  • Canopy mirrors

  • Pitot probes

  • UHF Antennae

These parts included in etched metal are a nice touch in particular the boarding ladder for posing the aircraft on the ground.

Markings

Decals are provided for 3 aircraft as follows:

  • AMD Mirage IIIR (307 TC) of ER 03/033 “Moselle” of the French Air Force based at Strasbourg in 1965.  This was the aircraft that the famous female pilot Jacqueline Auriol won the world speed on 14 June 1963.  The aircraft is painted in dark grey and dark green upper surfaces and aluminium under surface.

  • AMD Mirage 5F 37 SK of EC 03/013 “Auvergne” based at Colmar in 1976. The aircraft is painted in dark grey and dark green upper surfaces and aluminium under surface.

  • AMD Mirage IIIRZ of No 2 Sqn “Flying Cheetahs” of the south African Air Force based at Swartkops AFB in 1978. The aircraft is painted in Olive Drab and Deep Buff upper surfaces and light admiralty grey under surface.
