Stearman PT-17

Revell's 1/48 scale Stearman PT-17 is available online from Squadron.com

Description

With the recent release of the Revell 1/48th Stearman, I wanted to post some photos of my modification project of the old Lindberg 1/48th PT-17 Stearman kit.

I had seen the actual aircraft at a local airshow back in the 1970s and had the presence of mind at the time to take some photographs of it.

Some months before I began the project, I purchased the Stearman resin interior from Lone Star models and it saved me lots of scratch-building.

The spares box provided the cowling and Engines & Things, the 450hp engine. As this is an airshow aircraft, I scratch-built the wing walker's "stick" and had a friend cast the wheel pants.

I cut the elevators and positioned them down.

The owner's last name was "Griffin" and he had the Griffin herald emblazoned on the side of the fuselage, so I was able to have two Griffin decals, custom-made.

Testors square bottle enamels provided the basics for the custom-mixed colors as per the photos I took. Thin strips of chrome Mylar tape secured the fuel lines to the cabane struts.

I used a spinner from the Occidental T-6 kit, along with a tail wheel from the spares box.

Stainless steel rigging and bracing wire came from a "Sea Bird" scale wire kit.

Who knows? Maybe my completing the Lindberg kit actually "generated" Revell releasing their new kit! Good Modeling.......
