This is the first of a series of RAAF Mirage IIIO/D decal sheets from Southern Sky Models for the new Kinetic’s 1/48 Mirage IIIO.

The Aircraft Research Development Unit was originally formed in 1943 and since then has had a frontline RAAF fighter assigned to it for research and development purposes. The Mirage IIIO/D being no exception. From a modelling perspective, ARDU Mirages have been some of the more colourful examples flown by the RAAF.

Several sets of data and generic markings are supplied so more then one airframe can be used from the sheet. A separate instruction sheet is supplied for the location of all data for both the single and dual seat Mirage. Modellers will need to take note of the slight differences in tail flashes supplied. These changes include the style of the ARDU crest and the location in relationship to the tail strip. A quick study of the plans will indicate which tail flash is required.

The decals are fully screen printed as individual decals and are very thin. They have excellent colour depth and registration.

Future releases will include:

  • 2. SSM-48079 History of Australian 77 Squadron, 76 Squadron & 2 OCU Mirages

  • 4. SSM-48081 History of Australian 3 Squadron Mirage

  • 5. SSM-48082 History of Australian 75 Squadron Mirage & Williamtown Wing Commander’s personal Mirage.

These future sets will consist of three A5 decal sheets and include generic serials and markings, full data for both single and dual seat Mirages and all squadron markings.

These are sensationally produced decals providing the modeller plenty of colour for what is to be a popular subject.

Thanks to Southern Sky Models for this sample.
