Description

This is the old Revell kit, 1/72 scale. This particular aircraft, serialed 29040 and belonging to an unknown unit, was found at the Taqqadum (formerly Tammuz) airbase west of Baghdad. It was discovered buried shortly after the invasion in 2003 and supposedly was shipped the States.

This kit was brand new back in 1989 or so, and it shows its age. The front canopy didn’t quite fit correctly, and many parts were crude. But it looks like a MiG-29, and was a fun kit. Being dug up from a dirt pile and left out in the elements, I was able to weather it the way I would an armor model. The weathering pigments really made it look like a derelict. Great fun.

I used an aftermarket decal sheet from Linden Hill Imports, ‘Iraqi Fighters,’ that was apparently done in conjunction with Tom Cooper’s book of the same title. On the underside of the wings, the national marking is purposely canted to the fuselage, as reference photos show that some idiot Iraqi painted it the wrong way. However, the idiot who built the model (..me) got port and starboard mixed up, and I canted the decal on the wrong side. I also overdid the chipping on the markings, I think. Oh well. Looks good on the shelf next to my Desert Storm F-15.
