These little sets from Brengun will add a touch of finesse to your 1/48 US and British aircraft models.  Aftermarket accessories don’t come much simpler than this:  each set contains one small photo-etched fret.  The landing light set also has an instruction sheet.

Wing leading edge landing lights are poorly replicated in 1/48 aircraft kits.  In older kits, the lights are moulded as part of the wing, and you can choose to either paint them or cut out the plastic and scratch-build the light and cover.

Some more recent kits represent the light as a glass cover that fits (with varying degrees of precision) into the wing leading edge.  However there is usually little or no detail behind this cover, and often a yawning hole into the interior of the wing.

Brengun’s British landing lights set addresses this lack of detail in 1/48 and also 1/32 scale, where detail is even more important.  The style of light provided was fitted to some but not all British World War II-era aircraft, so check your references to make sure it’s correct for the machine you are modelling.

The small instruction sheet for this set is necessary because the reflector on each light needs to be annealed and then gently pushed into a concave shape with an embossing tool or pencil tip.  Following this the front part of the light is attached to the reflector, and the completed assembly inserted into its recess in the wing leading edge.

The US drop tank caps are even easier to use – simply check your references to ensure you’re using the right cap for the subject you are modelling (Brengun provides five options), then remove the moulded on detail and replace it with the etched cap.

The difference will be subtle but noticeable.

Conclusion

Both of these sets are highly recommended for anyone interested in improving the level of detail in their 1/48 and 1/32 aircraft models.

Thanks to Brengun for the review samples.
