Review Type:

First Look.

Advantages:

Superb quality and clever design of the PE flaps to ease assembly.

Disadvantages:

None noted.

Conclusions:

The Fw 189 is a worthy subject of additional cockpit detail since it should all be visible through its extensive cockpit glazing, whilst the use of a pre-cut paint mask is amply justified for the same reason. Lowered flaps are not for everyone, but Eduard’s clever design makes assembly of these delicately detailed structures far easier than appearances at first suggest.

I am happy to recommend all three detail sets and the pre-cut mask.

FirstLook

The four sets reviewed here are intended for ICM’s recently released Fw 189A-1 kit.

For many Eduard is a brand name synonymous with superb quality, and this is certainly the case with the review items, from their packaging and instructions, to the actual components.

Each set comes packed with a large card stiffener sealed in cellophane, along with printed instructions. The instructions for each item are also downloadable in as PDF’s from Eduard’s website. To view these please click on the linked part-numbers provided below:

  • CX474 – Pre-cut canopy and wheel mask. If ever there was a subject that justified the purchase of a pre-cut paint mask the Fw 189 is surely it.

  • SS579 – Cockpit details. This set addresses the more obvious cockpit details with a combination of coloured and plain PE.

  • 73579 – SS579 plus extra cockpit detail and a few external details. This set includes the details provided with SS579 and adds some structure and ammo cans to the cockpit, plus few details to the undercarriage, some fuselage steps and other minor items.

  • 72643 – Flaps. This set appears complex, but I having used Eduard’s 1/72 Bristol Blenheim flaps set, which follows a similar approach to parts breakdown and assembly, I can advise they are quite easy to construct. Of course, some minor surgery is required to remove the kit’s moulded flaps, and the instructions clearly detail what needs to doing.

The downloadable instructions should provide readers with almost all they need to about the contents and their intended placement. I have also provided these in the gallery section above, and scanned images of the PE frets below:
