FirstRead

Swedish defence aviation has provided us with a very diverse and interesting range of aircraft that have been used over many years. This range has included aircraft designed and constructed locally as well as a number of imported aircraft, mainly from the UK.

This book, authored by Mikael Forslund and with wonderful colour profiles created by Thierry Vallet, offers the reader, an absolute mass of wonderful historic photographs, many in colour of this range of aircraft and in the many visual guises they flew in over many years. Many of these photographs have been previously unpublished.

The list of aircraft includes:

  • SAAB J 21R

  • J 28 Vampire

  • SAAB J 29A Tunan

  • SAAB J 32B Lansen

  • De Havilland Venom

  • Hawker Hunter

  • Draken

  • Viggen

  • Grippen

The list above is in chronological order, as is the book. Each of these aircraft has an overview chapter of the service history of the aircraft, versions used and where existing examples can be found. This is followed by a chapter of the various camouflage schemes, with most of the profile pages paired with photographs of that actual aircraft, which I think is such a great idea. Within this chapter, information on actual wing and squadron markings are provided.

There is an appendix which provides additional information on the Swedish national markings and registration markings.

Conclusion

If there was one book the clearly sets out the colours and schemes used by the Swedish  defence forces for their fighter aircraft, this is it and it’s the one you need.

Not many books will give you both the depth and the range that Mikael has brought to us.

Again, I have had a challenging time selecting sample images for you due to the immense volume of quality images. For the Swedish airforce buffs, this is the book you must have.

Thanks to MMP Books  for the sample.
