FirstLook

Following up on their F-14A/B/D Tomcat Spine Detail Set, Kazan Model Dynamics has released another unique upgrade for Hasegawa's 1/48 scale Tomcat family - a multimedia F-14 Tomcat Wing Box Detail Set.

When complete, the set will allow you to display both wing boxes open.

The set comprises 40 parts in light grey coloured resin, a large photo-etched fret and instructions on one double-sided letter-sized sheet.

The bulk of the conversion is resin, comprising the box itself and interior detail.

Casting quality is perfect and detail is beautifully done. Most of the parts are cast onto strips and should be fast and easy to remove and clean up, but some of the fine plumbing (supplied as separate hoses) will need some time and care to free from their casting strips.

The photo-etched fret contains another seven parts.

Instructions are supplied on a single double-sided sheet of US letter-sized paper with diagrams of the conversion, and detailed text acrioss nine construction steps.

A PDF version is also available from the Kazan website.

Some surgery to the kit's upper fuselage is necessary with the removal of the wing box panels and the root of the wings. This will be the trickiest part of the project.

The instructions state that "this set may be used (and probably should be) in conjunction with the Spine Set".

They also recommend that if both sets are beig used, one should be started and finished before starting work on the other (in no prticular order) in to maintain the rigidity of the fuselage.

Conclusion

This set will deliver a striking conversion of your 1/48 scale Hasegawa F-14 Tomcat kit, either as a standalone display piece or as the centrepiece of a maintenance diorama. Detail and casting is exquisite.

It will also make a perfect companion to Kazan's Tomcat Spine Detail Set.

This gem will be best suited to moderately experienced modellers.

Thanks to Kazan Model Dynamics for the sample.
