Review Type:

First Look

Advantages:

Well produced, informative and an interesting look at some of the leaders in the war in the air.

Disadvantages:

None really except that I would have liked to have seen profiles of aircraft other than Spitfires! I know it is heresy but these chaps also flew Hurricanes, Buffalos, Blenheims, Typhoons, even Whirlwinds and Meteors, and it might have been nice to see their profiles as well.

Conclusion:

This will be a useful addition to the aviation library and I would commend it to both the modeller and the aviation historian.

FirstRead

The latest addition to this series looks at a number of squadron leaders from an equally large number of squadrons in various campaigns from the main Commonwealth allies and South Africa.

In the familiar A4 ‘bookazine’ format this publication consists of 64 pages on matte paper inside a case-bound glossy card cover adorned with a large B&W image of Ian Gleed’s Spitfire, which is interesting in the Ian Gleed is not treated inside the book!

One page explains and illustrates the major awards for airmen - VC, DSO, DFC, and DFM and then comes a list of all the men covered in this volume - all fifty of them! Half are from the RAF, 4 New Zealanders, 3 Australians, 6 Canadians, 5 South Africans, 2 Poles,  and one each from Norway, France, Belgium, USA, and a Czech.

Each man is then given a single page with a photo, an image of any awards, the national flag, serial number, outline of his career covering campaigns, planes flown, ranks, victories and a representative photo of a plane from his squadron.

Some pilots also have their mounts illustrated in colour profiles by Chris Thomas. These are Douglas Bader’s Spitfire IIb, Harry Bird-Wilson’s Spitfire IX, Ken Charney’s Spitfire XIV, Cecil Golding’s Spitfire IX, Geoff Northcott’s Spitfire XIV, Frank Scott-Malden’s Spitfire Vb and Jan Zumbach’s Mustang III. There are also a couple of full-page B&W images of representative squadron aircraft.

This book will interest the aviation and war historian and give modellers a personal view of life in the air from the allied side.

Conclusion

This will be a useful addition to the aviation library and I would commend it to both the modeller and the aviation historian.
