Review Type: First Read
Advantages: A great single-volume resource for the modellers of this popular aeroplane, well written, beautifully presented and full of useful information in both drawings and photos.
Disadvantages: None noted although you will need book stand as you could damage the excellent binding trying to force it flat on your bench.
Conclusion:

This is an excellent modeller’s resource that will be of great interest to the aviation historian. If you missed the earlier edition then this one will not disappoint.

FirstRead

This series has been well received by modellers and aviation fans alike. This volume is an expanded and updated second edition that now includes extra information and a kit build of the Zoukei-Mura 1/32 rendition of this iconic late-war aircraft, so popular with modellers even if it had a negligible impact on the outcome of WWII.

The glossy card-covered A4 is case-bound for strength and contains 160 pages and an inserted A3 set of 1/48 drawings at the back. It is divided into two broad sections and a set of Appendices.

AIRFRAME, covering

  1. Prototype evolution

  2. A series evolution

  3. B series evolution

  4. Projects and drawing-board designs

  5. Camouflage and Markings

  6. a mass of colour profiles

MINIATURE CHAPTERS, covering

  1. Kits and reviews

  2. Build of Revell/Dragon 1/72 A-1 version by Libor Jekl

  3. Build of Tamiya 1/48 A-12 version by Steve Evans

  4. Build of Zoukei-Mura 1/32 A-12 version by Steve Evans

  5. Build of Hong Kong Models 1/32 B-2 version by Dani Zamarbide

  6. A set of isometrics showing all the different variants from prototypes all the way through A and B variants  up to the Do635 paper projects - 16 pages of annotated drawings highlighting the variations present in each version.

  7. 35 pages of colour and B&W photos of airframe details drawn from contemporary and restored aircraft.

The Appendices then

  1. List all kits released,

  2. comprehensively cover all accessories produced in each scale,

  3. List decals and masks available, and

  4. finally give  detailed bibliography.

Apart from the case-binding making it difficult to take images of the pages without squashing the centre flat and possibly breaking the binding, for which I apologise, this is an excellent volume.

Conclusion

This is an excellent modeller’s resource that will be of great interest to the aviation historian. If you missed the earlier edition then this one will not disappoint.

Thanks to Valiant Wings Publishing for the sample.
