Way back in the 70s when I was a wee modeler and X-Acto blades were made of sharpened stone, the best way to convincingly replicate wood grain in small scale (say 1/72) usually utilized oil paints, hand brushing, and talent. I could buy the brushes and paints; it was the talent I lacked—then and now. That said, for those of us who are hand-brush challenged, the advent of quality wood grain decals was a game changer. I’ve got a fair number of these type decal sheets in ye olde decal stash but the recent offerings from AK really stand out with regards to the crispness of the wood grains combined with the lighter wood tones used on both sheets.
Both A5 size sheets (148x210mm/5.8x8.3in) are printed by Cartograph and come in in protective bags affixed to a sturdy paper backing with illustrated instructions printed the back. Both sheets are water-slide decals.
AK9081 (1/32-1/35-1/48):
The large primary panel has a nice, light, tan-yellow color with crisp wood grain grain. The smaller lower panels both have darker wood tones than does the primary.
The lower left panel has a grain similar to the primary panel whereas the right panel has a slightly orange tone with a crisply printed parallel slats and nail heads.
AK9084 (1/72):
The lighter tones and finer grains on the upper two panel of this sheet really lend themselves to use on smaller-scale models (1/72) as well as larger scales 1/48.
For a nice, crisp contrast, both of the lower panels have overall darker tones with even darker wood grains.
With multiple grains/colors offered on each sheet, these wood grain decals will come in very handy for multiple applications in scales ranging from 1/72 up to 1/32 scales.
