Revell's 1/48 scale
F/A-18E Super Hornet

by Brett Green

F/A-18E Super Hornet

Revell's 1/48 scale F/A-18E Super Hornet is available online from Squadron for $17.95!

Description

Here is my 1/48 scale F/A-18E Hornet finished in the markings of VFA-31 Tomcatters.

Wolfpack Designs' wing fold and dropped slats / flaps were added to the kit. This comprehensive resin conversion was of the highest quality. Some surgery is required to the wings of the Revell kit, but fit of the resin parts was very good indeed. The dropped and folded configuration really adds life to the finished model too.

Eduard's colour photo-etched set was used in the cockpit. The pre-printed parts are applied in layers, with separate bezels supplied for the large displays. I thought the photo-etched parts looked even better after a coat of flat clear to knock off the slight sheen. Two coats of Future were carefully applied to the displays after the flat coat.

Eduard self adhesive masks made the job of painting the canopy, wheels and the tiny windows in the nose gear door much faster and easier. I also sourced two extra drop tanks from Hasegawa's 1/48 scale F/A-18F kit.

Markings came from the excellent Afterburner Decals "Felix Rules - F/A-18E VFA-31. I believe that this set is yet to be released, so stay tuned for more news on this one.

My Super Bug will feature in a forthcoming Master Class book from Osprey Publishing.
