Yufei Mao is a talented modeller from China whose on-line builds of Russian and Chinese subjects have been very inspirational. If you have not seen examples of his work then perhaps the most recent has been an excellent 1/72 Su-27P build that has been published in the recent Fine Scale Modeler Special “How to Build Better Model Aircraft”. A key element of these builds has been the inclusion of some excellent scratch built accessories and corrections that he has now decided to market under the Fairy Hobby Banner.

Amongst the first releases from Fairy Hobby are a number of small but strategic correction sets for Russian (and other) types. FRH48005 and FRH48006 are nicely produced vacform canopies for the single and two seat Flanker respectively.

There are certain types where it seems everyone gets it wrong and one of the more common is the windscreen and canopy of the Flanker family with width at the base, height and angle of the canopy bow all considered being off. To fix this on the Academy family of 1/48 scale Fairy Hobby provide a nice set of crisp and clearly moulded Canopies with separate parts for OELS-27 (IRST) mount and head, along with spares for the clumsy.

As the overall outline of the canopy is apparently wrong on these kits, the installation is not as simple as cut out and replace but also requires some modification of the kit cockpit opening to fit correctly.

This is well documented in the accompanying instructions and should not present a challenge.

The one question I have with these sets is will it be worth the effort? After looking at the product and various reference books including Yefim Gordon’s and Andrei Fomin’s I would say yes it is.

Conclusion

In summary, these new products from Fairy Hobby are well executed, supported by good instructions and look to have great potential for modellers of Soviet/Russian aircraft. Each of the products seems well thought through and executed and will add impact to a model to which they are applied. I for one look forward to future products from this range as they are released.

Thanks to Fairy Hobby for the samples.
