Printscale continue to release decals for some great subjects across a range of scales. This 1/72 sheet of US Navy F-4B’s adds to that colourful catalogue of brightly decorated Phantom tails that are available.

This sheet provides decals and a selection of technical stencils for three US Navy aircraft from the Vietnam War era. A single colour reference photo for each jet is printed on the A4 colour and marking guide.

This is the second set of Printscale decals that I have reviewed and the high quality persists which is great to see. The carrier film is minimal and extremely thin. Colour density is strong and the artwork registration is spot on. I can’t see any soft or misaligned edges on the decals or stencils. What is apparent with the stencil markings is that some of them aren’t needed, in particular the low voltage formation lights. According to the supplied reference photos, none of the aircraft appear to have these lights in the suggested position on the decal placement guide. Check you references here before committing to placement of decals. Another thing is the ‘No Walk’ areas on the tailplane and inboard section of the wing are supplied as strips of red and yellow decals. You’ll need to measure and cut the required lengths for your model. Ideally this would have been a single piece decal. This is my only gripe with the sheet.

Paint is stated as ‘Light Gull Gray’ and ‘Glossy Insignia White’. Some FS numbers here would have been handy though I’ll assume that most modelers of the subject will know what paint colours are required.

The decal options supplied are:

  1. F-4B BuNo 152212/NE 102 flown by Lt Batson and Lt Cdr Doremus, VF 21, USS Midway, 17 June 1965.

  2. F-4B BuNo 153019/NL 201 flown by Lt Weigand and Lt(jg) Freckleton, VF-111, USS Coral Sea, 6 March 1972

  3. F-4B BuNo 151500/NL 216 flown by Lt McGuigan and Lt(jg) Fowler, VF-161, USS Constellation, 13 July 1966.

I don’t have a 1/72 F-4B in my collection but with this sheet at hand I’ll need to get myself one. Well done to Printscale for continuing to provide high quality and colourful markings to modeling community.

Recommended to all Phantom Phanatics.

Thanks to Printscale Decals for the review sample.
