FirstLook

Eduard released a slew of resin and photo-etched accessories for its Bf 109 F family.

Undoubtedly the most ambitious of these was a full engine and fuselage gun set. This offers full side and top engine detail, a complete cowl gun bay, upper engine and gun cowls and optional parts that will permit the modeller to use this set on most versions including the F-2, F-4 and Trop aircraft.

Eduard's BRASSIN 1/48 scale Bf 109 F Engine and Fuselage Guns comprises 52 parts in grey resin, one brass plated photo-etched fret and a small decal sheet with engine numbers.

The engine block is cast in a single piece with full side and top detail. The bottom of the engine is not intended for display.

Full wiring and plumbing are already cast crisply into place on this impressive single part.

The cowlings feature gorgeous detail inside and out.

Engine bearers are separate parts. The cowl guns and their mounts are cast as a single part each with blast tubes in place.

The front of the engine firewall and the base for the cowl guns are cast with an intricate network of wiring. These should look fantastic with some careful painting and weathering. The supercharger is equally well detailed.

The exhaust stubs are separate parts and are hollowed out at the ends. They don't look as tall and toothy as the kit parts, probably the most obvious lingering nitpick of Eduard's Bf 109 family, so this is a nice bonus correction!

Early (small) and later (large) supercharger intakes are included.

Remaining resin parts include the splined propeller shaft, optional tropical filter, upper gun cowl and other details.

The photo-etched fret offers scale-thickness exhaust shields and small detail parts.

A small decal sheet with a number jungle and larger "E" and "N" numbers for the DB601E or DB601N engine are included. As far as I am aware, only the E applies for the Bf 109 F.

The package is rounded out with heavily illustrated instructions.

Conclusion

This is a massive upgrade for Eduard's recent 1/48 scale Bf 109 F kits.

Despite the superb detail present here, Eduard has designed the engine bay to be as simple to build as possible.

I partially built the very similar Bf 109 G-6 engine a few years ago and it was a pleasure to work on, I have no reason to expect that this will be any different.

Thanks to Eduard for the samples and images.
