USAAC and USAF national insignia conform to a specific set of proportions. An excellent discussion from 2012 about the dimensions of the USAF insignia may be found on HyperScale's Plane Talking Forum by following this link.

A surprising number of kit manufacturers' and after market decal companies' stars and bars suffer from inaccurate proportions.

Fundekals has released four sets of USAAC and USAF national insignia in four different styles with the correct proportions.

They are:

WWII Standard

Red Surround

Grey

Post War

To quote fundekals' website:

"Our insignias are constructed precisely according to the published specification created in 1943, and updated since. Unfortunately, the insignia decals in a lot of model kits, and even a few aftermarket decal sheets do not conform to the specification. We have tried to match the colors used as closely as possible to the actual standards ranging from 15” (nominal diameter - measured by the diameter of the circle that touches the outer points of the star) to 70”, in 5” increments, covering virtually every application possible. While not every aircraft used a size divisible by 5, the vast majority did. With a little math you can also use these insignias for projects in other scales, but we’ll leave that to you!"

Each set comprises one large and one slightly smaller decal sheet offering decals from 15 scale inches to 70 scale inches.

The sizes of the markings are printed on the decal sheets.

The decals are printed in perfect register and the colours look great.

The decals are delivered in a ziplock plastic bag without instructions or cover sheets, helping to keep the price down. Beyond the size and style of the decals, these really do not require instructions anyway.

These will be a nice compliment to the F-106 decals reviewed last week or any of the hundreds of WWII and post-war USAAC and USAF subjects.
