FirstLook

Any new release from LifeLike decals is something to look forward to. They research their decals thoroughly, have a happy knack of choosing interesting and colourful subjects, and they always offer comprehensive additional information.

This time around, LifeLike has scaled up their 1/48 scale decal set no. 48051 to 1/32 scale, celebrating the various aircraft and marking schemes of Col. John D. Landers' P-51D "Big Beautiful Doll" Mustangs.

Three aircraft in six different eye-catching schemes are covered in this release.

Two of the schemes are the early version P-51D with no fin fillet. These will be suitable for the recent 1/32 scale Revell P-51D Mustang kit. The Tamiya kits include all the parts required for an aircraft with a fin fillet or without, so they will be appropriate for all these schemes.

Details of the specific aircraft are as follows. All aircraft feature kill marks and "Big Beautiful Doll" writing:

  • P-51D (early, no fin fillet) 38th FS, 55th FG, green and yellow checked nose, green and yellow striped spinner, lower fuselage invasion stripes

  • P-51D (early, no fin fillet) C.O. 357th FG, red and yellow checked nose, red and yellow striped spinner, lower fuselage invasion stripes

  • P-51D, C.O. 78th FG, black and white checked engine cowling, black and white halved spinner, black rudder

  • P-51D, C.O. 78th FG, black and white checked engine cowling, black and white halved spinner (minor variations to the aircraft above)

  • P-51D, C.O. 78th FG, black and white checked engine cowling, black and white halved spinner (minor variations to the aircraft above)

  • P-51D, C.O. 361st FG, yellow engine cowling, yellow spinner, blue rudder and canopy frame

All the diamond, checquer and stripe markings are provided as decals.

Two folded A4 pages plus an A5 page are included in the resealable plastic bag. The first doubles as the cover and the profile page. Data on colours, markings and operations are included.

The decals are printed by Microscale and appear to be in perfect register. Colours look good too. There is a full-sized plus four smaller sheets.

This is a high quality release for Tamiya's and Revell's 1/32 scale P-51D Mustang kits.
