Brengun's 1/48 scale
Messerschmitt P.1103

by Brett Green

Messerschmitt P.1103

Meng's 1/48 scale F-35A Lightning II is available online from Squadron for USD$59.99

Description

Here is my Brengun 1/48 scale Messerschmitt P.1103 rocket project. The real aircraft never left the drawing board but I wanted to see what it might have looked like in action.

The model is quite tiny and is made up from only 22 parts in grey plastic and one in clear, but fit is quite good and detail is more than adequate.

It's a fast build too, as you might expect.

I cut a pilot from the sprues of Tamiya's 1/48 scale Me 262 and adapted him for the little P.1103. This demanded some rump surgery and eventually the amputation of both legs from around the knees down.

Other additions include the DF loop (the mount was spare part from an Eduard Fw 190 D-9 and the loop is a staple from a Tamiya plastic bag bent to shape); and the whip antenna. Although Luftwaffe aircraft did not use standalone whip antennae in action, I figured that they might have gotten around to it by the time the P.1103 entered service!

The P.1103 is small! These are both 1/48 scale (and the 109 is not a big aircraft).

The kit decals are just fine but I decided to use some spares from an old Cutting Edge He 162 sheet (Item No. CED48220). They behaved perfectly.

For the scenic compositions, I photographed the model outside (just using my phone) and merged the photos with some high-altitude shots that I took from an aeroplane some years ago.

Photoshop was used for the blending, motion blur, partial desaturation, lens flare, the rocket exhaust and contrails from the wing tips.

This was a fast and fun little project.

I'll be writing this one up for a detailed article in Issue 99 of Military Illustrated Modeller magazine.

Thanks to Brengun for the sample.
