Airfix's 1/24 scale
Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib

by Mark Kannemeyer

Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib

Description

This is my recently completed Tiffy that I've been working on and off over 6 months. Airfix certainly didn't make it easy but with carefully attention it all does comes together.

The kit was finished in the markings of Wing Commander Charles Green as it may have looked while operating from B.5 Advanced Landing Ground, Normandy June 1944. Kit decals were used and went down well.

I tried to capture the look of these aircraft with the dirt, dust and oil that would have accumulated on these aircraft while operating from the improvised airstrip during those desperate days following 6 June 1944.

I loaded the model with a mixed bag of fragmentation and 60lb HE heads that were sometimes carried. These were from Master and are excellent.

I was informed that the red brown lining in the gun bays and covers was a compressed woody fibres material. I also added the missing plywood ribs (none load bearing)in the gun bays with a felt type material over the top. Information forwarded to me by Tim Davies at the RAF museum. In the process I may have got some of the colours wrong, but by the time I got the info I had already painted and assembled part of the internal structures based on what Airfix suggested. In some cases I have to admit that it was best guess based on the info I had.
