Exito Decals is a relatively new company that is building a reputation for thorough research and high quality frameable artwork.

Today I am examining their 1/48 scale Item No. ED48007 - 1:48 Yakovlev Yak-1b "Yak Attack". This covers three Yak-1b subjects. The newest 1/48 scale Yak-1b is by Modesvit from 2012. The only other option that I am aware of in this scale is the Accurate Miniatures kit, originally released in the late 1990s and re-boxed by Zvezda and several times by Eduard since then.

The set is also available in 1/72 scale, which will suit the excellent new ARMA kit and also the very respectable Brengun offering.

The set comprises an A4 cover sheet plus three A4-sized glossy cardboard sheet in landscape formats. The front of each sheet features two side views of one aircraft and a brief description at the bottom of the page. These are high-quality frameable artworks.

The rear of each cardboard sheet offers upper plan view, scrap views, multiple historical photos, additional notes, colour callouts, references and assistance for decal placement.

The lovely illustrations are the work of Janusz Swiatlon.

Details of the three subjects are:

  • Yakovlev Yak-1b, flown by Capt. Vladimir P. Pokrovskiy of 2nd GIAP / 6th IAD, Air Force of the Northern Fleet, probably late 1943.

  • Yakovlev Yak-1b, coded ‘White 42’, flown by Snr. Lt. Garri A. Merkviladze of 152nd GIAP / 12th GIAD, 1st Ukrainian Front, Germany, spring 1945.

  • Yakovlev Yak-1b, most likely coded ‘White 20’, flown by Snr. Lt. Fotiy Y. Morozov of 31st GIAP / 6th GIAD, 4th Ukrainian Front, first half of 1944

None of these marking options have been accurately portrayed in decals until now.

The Cartograf decals are as well presented as you would expect with perfect registration and printing.

Conclusion

This is a very attractive set of decals with three pieces of frameable artwork. The quality and research is obvious too. .

Thanks to Exito Decals for the review sample
