Hasegawa's 1/72 scale
Mistel 2

by Ian Wilson

Mistel 2

Description

A bit of background to the model, I have always found the Mistel aircraft interesting and I have been trying to track one down for several years. This model is based on the Hasegawa 1/72 Mistel 2 model. It is quite a rare model and I found this one a while ago, whilst on holiday in Sydney!

I replaced the Hasegawa FW 190 with the Eduard version, as this allowed me to easily include all the upgrades for this kit, including the exposed BMW engine, lowered flaps and detailed prop. The BMW engine by Eduard was probably the most challenging part of the whole build, and it’s fortunate that most of it remains visible. I also replaced the Ju 88 warhead, with the Aires version, which I felt looked closer to the photos of Mistel 2.

The Hasegawa Ju 88G was relatively straightforward to build, but due to its multiple variants, some of the areas around the engine nacelles needed filling and re-scribing. The undercarriage wheels were replaced with the Eduard set.

I used the Robert Forsyth books on Mistel by Classic and Osprey as invaluable references and the model represents ‘Red 12’ of 6./KG200 based Denmark, in early 1945, hence the snow on the base. The model took about 3 months to build.
