Red Roo Models' 1/48 scale
DH-94 Moth Minor
in RAAF Service
by Brett Green
Here is my first completed model of 2024 - Red Roo Models’ 1/48 scale DH-94 Moth Minor in RAAF Service.
This is a multimedia kit, mainly conventionally cast resin.
There are 30 parts in grey coloured resin, two parts in clear resin, four salmon coloured 3d printed resin parts, two parts in white metal; seven photo-etched parts on one fret, decals for seven marking options and comprehensive instructions (18 pages).
The parts breakdown is quite straightforward, making it suitable for modellers who might want to try a multimedia kit for the first time.
I built mine pretty much straight from the box and really enjoyed the project.
Paints are mostly SMS lacquer paints.
I made a few bloopers though, all my fault entirely.
First, I was dipping the windscreens in Future when one of them went pinging off my haemostat never to be seen again. Fortunately, Gary from Red Roo Models was able to supply a replacement.
Next, in my haste to get the model together I joined the fuselage halves before I remembered that I had to make the throttle assembly from the plastic discs and copper wire included in the kit.
And finally, I used the wrong serial. I had a choice of three and I somehow used one from a different machine.
More haste, less speed…
I'm writing this one up in detail for an article in Issue 224 of Model Airplane International magazine.
Thanks to Red Roo Models for the sample
