Here is my Hasegawa 1/48 scale Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6.
This aircraft has been repainted in approximations of US markings, with a gigantic US flag on each fuselage side, German/Romanian markings painted out and early-war style US roundels painted on the upper and lower wings.
This aircraft retained the 3-9 Fighter Group badge on the cowl and the late-war style Werknummer on the rudder.
Decals were RB Productions’ debut set that offered the choice of five aircraft flown by top Romanian fighter ace, Cpt.Av. (R) Constantin Bazu Cantacuzino. The Flag Gustav was one of the options.
Cantacuzino was on a diplomatic mission to deliver the top ranking US POW in Romania back to the Allies as a peace overture from the Romanians. The wild US markings were an effort to avoid being shot down on the way.
Hasegawa's 1/48 scale Bf 109 G-6 was originally released in 1999 and although it has been clearly eclipsed by the Eduard annd Tamiya 1/48 scale Bf 109 G-6 kits, I think it is still worth building if you have one stashed away.
Enhancements to my Hasegawa Gustav include:
- Eduard SPACE Item No. 3DL 48092 - Bf 109 G-14/AS.
- Aires Item No. 4271 – Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 Cockpit
- BarracudaCast Item No. BR48390 – Bf 109 G Wheels Plain Hub, Smooth Tyre
- RB Productions Item No. RB-D##01 – Cpt. Av. (R) Constantin Bazu Cantacuzino Decals
- Eduard MASK Item No. JX 504 – 1:32 Spinner Spirals F w190 A/F
Paints are almost exclusively SMS acrylic lacquers. I have also fallen in love their Flat Clear varnish!
I'll be writing this one up in Model Airplane International magazine Issues 237 & 238.
