Eduard 1/48 scale
Mustang Mk.III

by Brett Green

North American Mustang Mk.III
450 Squadrons RAAF
Lavariano Italy, April 1944-45

Description

Here is my just completed 1/48 scale Eduard P-51B Mustang, built almost straight from the box.

The only two departures from the instructions were using Red Roo Decals RRD4847 “The Away Team Part 1”, 3 and 450 Squadrons RAAF, P-51C in Italy 1944-45” and Eduard’s BRASSIN Item No. 648993 – P-51B/C Exhaust Stacks.

The aircraft carries interesting mix of markings. The Southern Cross on the light blue rudder is a 3 Squadron RAAF emblem – but in the later part of this aircraft’s career it was transferred to 450 Squadron RAAF based at Lavariano Italy in April 1945. At this time the aircraft received its 450 Squadron codes – OK-F – but retained the Southern Cross rudder.

My Mustang was built according to the instructions with all the options required for the open birdcage canopy.

The only problem I had was self-imposed. I glued the wing halves together but I somehow failed to notice the clear plug for the port wing leading edge landing light in the instructions. There was no way that I could wiggle the landing light plug in between the assembled wing halves.

I dug myself out of this hole by filling the landing light opening with Araldite two-part clear epoxy putty. This was sanded to conform with the profile of the wing leading edge.

I will be writing this one up in a detailed article in Issue 245 of Model Airplane International magazine.

This is another great model from Eduard.

Thanks to Eduard for the sample
