Mini Craft Collection (MCC) has been steadily expanding its range of 3D-printed accessories beyond its earlier emphasis on modern aircraft, and the company’s recent Lysander releases demonstrate just how much potential there is for Second World War subjects.

Item Nos. MCC4850 and MCC4851 are two separate upgrades for the Airfix 1/48 Westland Lysander Mk.I/Mk.III undercarriage , offered as uncovered and covered versions respectively. Both are designed as direct detail upgrades for the Airfix kit.

The sets each contains 35 grey 3D-printed resin parts, four black-coloured 3D-printed resin components, 23 nickel-plated photo-etched parts and an instruction sheet. The inclusion of two tyre styles is thoughtful, with both slick and radial tread patterns offered in black resin. Raised sidewall lettering is printed onto the sides of the tyres too. The inclusion of a replacement tail wheel is a nice touch.

The sets also include the associated bomb racks and stores, allowing the modeller to equip the Lysander with its characteristic light offensive load. The 20 lb Cooper bombs were carried on the small underwing racks, while 250 lb bombs were also available for heavier loads. The intricate bomb rack is printed with racks amd sway braces, minimising the number of resin parts while not compromising detail in any way.

The 20 lb bombs are presented as two pieces each. The 250 lb bombs are multi-part assemblies.
As might be expected from MCC, the 3D-printed components are crisply rendered, with delicate detail that would be difficult to reproduce in conventional injection-moulded plastic.

The choice of two configurations is presnted. MCC4850 depicts the exposed undercarriage, while MCC4851 provides the covered arrangement. This allows the modeller to select the version appropriate to the particular aircraft and period.
These sets join MCC’s growing family of Lysander upgrades, which already includes a detailed cockpit interior (MCC4842), separate control surfaces (MCC4843) and the new Bristol Mercury engine (MCC4849). Taken together, these releases provide the ingredients for a very comprehensive upgrade of the Airfix Lysander.

With excellent printing quality, useful options and a thoughtful combination of resin and photo-etched components, MCC4850 and MCC4851 represent substantial improvements over the kit parts.

Highly recommended.
