All great series come in clusters for three.  The whole Trinity, Lord of the Rings, Star War-original trilogy and Detail & Scale’s P-51 books on the Mustang. 

Written by Bert Kinzey and illustrated by Rock Roszak, this book is in the typical D&S format and quality.  The author and illustrator are both consummate professionals.  They have a winning format and this book continues to deliver. 

There are 305 high resolution photographs, 266 of which are in full color, with 16 drawings and seven color profiles in the Apple Book format.  There are 150 photos in the P-51D and K sections alone.  Other formats are available, including print, Kindle, Apple, Kobo and Google Play book formats. 

Why a digital book?  First off, you can adjust just about anything, from font size (no need for readers) to pictures (which can be ‘blown’ up to just about any size) and printed if you should choose to do it.  The other really nice thing is that you can take a whole library with you when you travel to read at your leisure and it doesn’t take up any shelf space. 

For me, this book couldn’t come at a better time.  I was just starting an Eduard 1/48th P-51D-5.  This book was invaluable on my model table and it took up virtually no room. 

This ‘book’ covers the P-51D, P-51K, P-51H, photo recon variants of each, as well as, trainers and Experimental Mustangs.  First off the book goes into a brief history of the aircraft up through the P-82. 

Then it breaks down into the individual aircraft types.  The one that fascinated me was the P-51D prototype with the P-51B wings.  It just looks ‘different’.  The history section covers from development right on through Korea and into the 1970s, with the development of the turbine powered PA-48 Enforcer.  Historic detail is covered on each variant.  These variants include the D, K and Mustang IV and IVa of the British and its commonwealth.  Photo recon variants, the F-6D and F-6K, are also shown in great detail as are the two seat variants, TF-51D and TP-51D.  For me the one that always excites me is the TF-51D US Army chase planes.  Just something about that white top and dark Olive Drab belly with full color markings.  The P-51H, an often overlooked variant, is covered in the history section as well. 

Then comes the part that makes it all worthwhile, the detail section.  Each variant is explored in photos.  The pictures are crystal clear and there is a wealth of knowledge in the captions.  If you are building an Eduard or Tamiya kit with all the parts opened up, this section alone is reason enough to buy the book.  Everything that a modeler needs is included, cockpit, engine area, prop, landing gear, wings, fuselage, tail and armament, along with external stores.  And not just for the P-51D/K but the P-51H as well. 

Then comes the section that sets Detail & Scale apart, the Modelers Section.  The models range from 1/144th to 1/24th scale.  Because of the huge amount of models devoted to the P-51 D&S scale have deviated from their normal format, and cover the scale mentioning from historic kits to kits that are readily available today.  They do tell you what is right and wrong with each kit in all the scales, so the information is invaluable to the modeler. 

If you’ve looked at any Detail & Scale reference book, you’ll know exactly what you are getting.  If you haven’t, you get history, reference photos and a modeling section that will inspire you to take up a Mustang kit.  This third volume completes the P-51 series.  Some may say, why would I need this if I have the older books?  This ain’t your daddy’s book.  The digital book is an impressive way to build your library without having to make shelf space, plus the benefits of being able to enlarge detail pics and text are .  The ability to enlarge photos and print them out is very helpful.  This is another winner from Detail & Scale.
