Philedition continues its Squadrons series with this volume devoted to the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII in service with South African, Canadian and Australian units in the Mediterranean theatre.

Written by Phil H. Listemann, with colour profiles by Gaetan Marie of Bravo Bravo Aviation, this title delivers a useful blend of operational history, personal stories and modelling inspiration. The book comprises 40 pages including glossy card covers in 22cm x 28cm portrait format. There are nine colour profiles and more than 30 wartime images included.

Following the established format of the series, the book examines the men who flew the Spitfire Mk.VIII, providing details of individual pilots and their subsequent fates. Most are accompanied by colour profiles of their aircraft, supported by period photographs and informative captions. The combination of pilot biographies, photographs and colour artwork makes it particularly useful for modellers seeking to identify specific aircraft and their markings.

The photographic coverage includes plenty of images of the pilots themselves, as well as the aircraft they flew. These personal touches help bring the operational history to life, while the accompanying captions provide valuable context for the images and colour profiles.

Another useful feature is the inclusion of squadron victory boards and operational summaries. These provide details of commanding officers, squadron codes, first and last operational sorties, total sorties flown and aircraft written off. This information offers a concise overview of each unit's operational record and will appeal to readers interested in the broader history of these squadrons.

For aviation historians, the book brings together the experiences of three Commonwealth air forces operating the Spitfire Mk.VIII in the Mediterranean. For modellers, the combination of period photographs, individual pilot details and colour profiles provides plenty of inspiration and reference material for depicting particular aircraft.

Philedition’s Squadrons No. 84 is a focused and useful addition to Spitfire literature. Anyone interested in the Mk.VIII, or the South African Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force in the Mediterranean, will find plenty to explore in its pages.
